The Copart Auction - Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

The Copart Auction - Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Copart is one of the largest American insurance car auctions in the world, where thousands of vehicles are sold every day. The vast majority of cars imported into Georgia come from this very platform.

What is an insurance auction?

Vehicles on Copart are listed mainly by insurance companies, banks and dealer networks. These are vehicles damaged in road accidents, written off, stolen and recovered, or retired from fleets. Since sellers aim to recover their losses quickly, auction prices are considerably lower than market value. However, along with the low price comes the need to study each lot carefully.

What to look for when inspecting a lot

Before buying, an in-depth analysis of the lot's technical and legal details is essential:

  • Damage type (Primary / Secondary Damage): pay attention to where the damage is - Front End, Rear End, Side, Hail, Water/Flooded and so on.
  • Engine status:
    • Run & Drive: the car starts, goes into gear and moves (though this does not mean the car is mechanically sound).
    • Starts / Engine Start Program: the engine starts, but the car does not move.
    • Enhanced Vehicles / Non-Builders: the engine does not start or the damage is severe.
  • Key availability (Keys): YES or NO - a missing key means additional costs.
  • Seller: it is better to buy a car from an Insurance Company than from private dealers (Dealer / Re-seller).
  • Export document type (Title Type): not every document allows a car to be exported from the US (for example, export with Bill of Sale, Junk, Parts Only or Certificate of Destruction documents is restricted or involves additional costs). Before buying, check our export documentation table.
  • History check (CARFAX / AutoCheck): be sure to check the car's past by its VIN - service history, actual mileage and previous accidents.

How to start bidding

Bidding independently on Copart requires a special licensed account, auction fees (Copart Fees) and a deposit.
